Butler Signed Railroad Coupon Signed with Corresponding Postal Cover, and a Handwritten Letter, ca. 1828-60s Massachusetts. Lot includes 3 pieces, ca. 1828-70s: Issued Railroad Pass for use on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad by a “Disabled Volunteer Soldier,” signed by Benjamin Franklin Butler at bottom right with black handstamp; Corresponding Postal Cover addressed to Major General B.F. Butler in Lowell, Massachusetts; and a handwritten letter regarding the arrival of a passenger via sea vessel. All are in Fine- VF condition. Benjamin Franklin Butler (November 5, 1818 - January 11, 1893) was an American major general of the Union Army, politician, lawyer, and businessman from Massachusetts. Born in New Hampshire and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Butler is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War and for his leadership role in the impeachment of U.S. President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and often controversial figure on the national stage and on the Massachusetts political scene, serving five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and running several campaigns for governor before his election to that office in 1882. POW Issued First of Exchange from a Military Prison in Charleston, South Carolina, and Dated, 1864With Corresponding Documentation. Charleston, South Carolina, September 24, 1864. Lot of 2 pieces that correspond with each other, Includes: Issued $50.00 First of Exchange payable in Gold, dated September 24, 1864, to be paid to the order of Thomas Jones, issued from a Confederate Military Prison in Charleston, South Carolina, drawn by Edwin Reid, 2nd Lieutenant of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On the back of the exchange is handwritten, “This money was received for my personal use while a prisoner of war at Charleston, S.C.” with Edwin Reid’s name underneath. VF condition for age; Lot also includes a 2-page corresponding document, dated September 1865, post war, which states that Thomas Jones is the owner of the $50.00 Exchange claimed against the estate of Edwin Reid (deceased), and that no payments have been made as sworn in September, 1865, Also in VF condition. Edwin Reid was a 2nd Lieutenant of the Third Ohio Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which remained in active service until the regiment was captured by General Forrest in 1863. Edwin Reid entered service in 1861 at 18 years old, and was wounded at Dug Gap, Alabama in April 30th, 1863, and was captured at Rome, Georgia on May 3rd, 1863 and became a Prisoner of War. This promissory exchange was issued by Edwin Reid while he was a Prisoner of War in a Military Prison, and is incredibly rare, and including corresponding documents.
