Issued Order from the Secretary of the Interior “accompanied by a Schedule of selections certified February 3rd, 1871 by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs” made by members of the Chippewas of Saginaw, Swan Creek and Black River, of Michigan. This Land Grant certifies that the “North East quarter of the North East quarter of section thirty-four, in Townships fifteen North, of Range five West in the State of Michigan, containing forty acres” is selected by and for “Aw-be-taw-waw-naw- quot who is denominated as ‘competent,’ and in whose favor patent is ordered to be issued.” The actual spelling of Native American name may differ from the handwriting on the piece. Signed by Ulysses S. Grant as President of the United States at bottom right. Black text with embossed seal at bottom left, Recorded in “Chippewas of Saginaw, Swan Creek, and Black River. Vol. 2 page 399.” Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885) was an American military officer and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. As Commanding General, he led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and thereafter briefly served as Secretary of War. Later, as president, Grant was an effective civil rights executive who signed the bill that created the Justice Department and worked with Radical Republicans to protect African Americans during Reconstruction. R., was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900.
