Est. $ 40-80 Ephemera - Numismatic & Security Printing New York 1209 1209 L etter from the Mayor of Kinderhook, NY to the State Comptroller Regarding RaisingTaxes for New Fire Trucks, ca.1856 Kinderhook, New York, 1856. Interesting handwritten letter from the President (Mayor)of Kinderhook, Thomas M. Burt, to the Comptroller of the State of New York, Lorenzo Burrows, stating that the trustees of the Village of Kinderhook have applied to the Legislation, “now in session,” for the authority to raise village taxes. Burt writes that the village received a “Fire Engine, hose and hose cart,” which the village is now indebted to. At bottom is a note from the Justice of the Peace, who writes that Thomas M. Burt swears that the above report is true. Lorenzo Burrows (March 15, 1805 - March 6, 1885) was an American merchant, banker and politician. He was the eighteenth New York State Comptroller, serving from 1856 to 1857, and later unsuccessfully ran for Governor of New York.
