Archives International Auctions - Sale 80 107 October 25, 2022 Archives International Auctions www.archivesinternational.com 566 566 Harry Truman Letter with Autograph and Corresponding Note, 1966 Lot includes 2 pieces, both are related and from 1966: A facsimile copy on thin yellow paper of a March 29th typewritten letter from Matthew L. Lifflander to Harry S. Truman, stating that “I have for many years been a staunch admirer of yours, as well as an active Democratic Committeeman in Westchester County.” Lifflander states that both President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey sent along personally autographed pictures “in appreciation of some of my political activities with the President’s Club of New York.” He continues “I feel very badly, however, displaying these fine momentous [sic] in my office without having one of yourself, whom I regard as our greatest President.” Lifflander then asks Truman for an autographed photo to be personally inscribed to him. The second piece is the April 1st reply from Harry Truman, showing his appreciation for the letter, and stating that an autographed photograph was enclosed with the letter, which also bears his autograph at bottom. Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 - December 26, 1972) was an American politician who served as the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 34th vice president from January to April 1945 under President Franklin Roosevelt and as a United States Senator from Missouri from 1935 to January 1945. Having assumed the presidency after Roosevelt’s death, Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established both the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain the expansion of communism. He proposed numerous liberal domestic reforms, but few were enacted by the Conservative Coalition which dominated the Congress. The original copy is in fine condition with some signs of wear, whereas the reply from Truman is in VF condition. Interesting pair of letters. Hill Autograph, Former Governor of NewYork, 1889 New York, 1889. Signature of David B. Hill on executive chamber nominating Silman E. Topp (?) as a commissioner for the State of New York. David B. Hill (August 29, 1843 – October 20, 1910) was an American politician from New York who was the 29th Governor of New York from 1885 to 1891 and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1892 to 1897. In 1892, he made an unsuccessful bid for President on a platform of bimetallism, but lost the nomination to Grover Cleveland, his longtime political rival and former running mate. As governor, Hill opposed attempts to enact civil service reform and tax liquor. He supported regulation of tenement housing and labor reforms such as maximum work hours. On May 15, 1885, Hill signed “a bill establishing a ‘Forest Preserve’ of 715,000 acres that was to remain permanently ‘as wild forest lands.’” This tract soon became the Adirondack Park. ����������������������������������� Est. $75-150 569 569 Governor DeWitt Clinton, 1827 Signed Military Appointment New York, 1827. Witnessed and signed by De Witt Clinton as Governor of New York at bottom right. Black text and handwriting, Embossed Excelsior seal at bottom left. Fine condition with holes from fold lines at center, fragile margins, and some toning. DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 - February 11, 1828), whose name was almost always spelled De Witt during his lifetime and until the late 20th century, was an American politician and naturalist. He served as a United States senator, as the mayor of New York City, and as the seventh governor of New York. In this last capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. Clinton was a major candidate for the American presidency in the election of 1812, challenging incumbent James Madison. ��������� Est. $180-300
