Pennsylvania & New York, 1845 and 1856. Lot of 2 pieces, Includes: 1845, Erie Canal Company $75 I/C 6% Bond, Black text with black border on light blue paper, allegorical women at left and right, Canal image at top center, Handwritten list of interest payments, VF condition; and, 1856, Manhattan Company, State of New-York, Transfer Office, $70,000 “being in full payment of 4 certain Certificates, issued...for the Enlargement of the Erie Canal,” VF condition. The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. New York, September 2, 1816. Document which states the appointment of a member of the 20th Regiment of Militia in the State of New York to the post of Orderly First Sergeant, due to his demonstrated “Patriotism, Courage, and good Conduct.” Black text and handwriting. Issued and signed by David Curtis, Lieutenant Colonel of the same regiment. The name of the appointed militia member, as well as the Captain of the Company, is obscured. Information on New York’s 20th Regiment of Militia in 1816 is extremely scarce. Fine condition with some staining and fragile fold lines. New York, April 19, 1952. Bernard Baruch personal letterhead with signature, in which Baruch provides the State Department a reference for Samuel David McGill, in VF condition. Baruch (1870-1965) was a financier, stock speculator, and philanthropist in the early 20th century, as well as serving as a presidential advisor during both World Wars. He also had an avid interest in thoroughbred racing, was close friends with Winston Churchill, and is the namesake of Baruch College in Manhattan.
