Issued in New York, First of Exchange for the sum of 250 Pounds Sterling to be paid to Robert Elam. Black text with dark brown handwriting, Floral design at left, S/N 6. Signature has been crossed out at bottom right underneath “Your Assured Friend,” John Warder & Co. appears at bottom left, and handwriting on back mentions Nathaniel and Faulkner Philips & Co. VF condition, especially for its age. John Warder & Co. was a trading house with ties to Philadelphia and London. The company declared bankruptcy in 1793 or 1794. Unfortunately for American founding father and financier Robert Morris, John Warder & Co. held a large amount of Morris’ speculative bank stocks. By Morris’ own admission, the failure of this company led to his subsequent bankruptcy. Unable to pay his creditors, Morris was confined in the Prune Street debtors’ apartment adjacent to Walnut Street Prison from 1798 to 1801. Handwritten document starting that Jacob Hays promised to pay James L. Bogart “the just and full sum of sixty five pound[s] current lawful money of the state of New York” with signatures and a single seal at bottom. No further location details are provided. Jacob Hays, mentioned in the document, is possibly related to another Jacob Hays, who was a colonial American Jewish merchant that arrived from Holland in the 1720s, and was one of the early members of the Shearith Israel Congregation Synagogue in New York City. Brunswick, Georgia, Uncut sheet of 4 notes, 18xx (originally printed in 1850-60’s, these are ca.1960-70’s), $1-$2-$3-$5, (Haxby Unlisted), Modern “Proprietary Proof ” printed from the original plates by ABNC in the 1970-80s, The $1 note has train at station middle top and left with cotton boll LR; the $2 note has sailing ships in rough water in middle with Georgia Arms LL and seated reaper LR; the $3 note has happy sailor at left, workers harvesting tree sap with man on horseback top center and wide eyed horse on LR; the $5 note has impressive steamship in middle, allegorical plenty with cornucopia on LR and standing young girl or cherub on pedestal on left, Black printing on white Paper, CU to Gem Uncirculated condition.
