New Granada was the name given to the parts of South America held by Spain. After liberation from the Spanish, in 1819-22, New Granada, Venezuela and Ecuador merged to form the Republic of Greater Colombia. After violent civil wars, this republic also fell apart. In 1861 New Granada was a loose confederation of states. These certificates were used to attract people to colonize and cultivate the barren land. It was supposed to be a state structure based on the American model, but internal tensions that kept sprouting did not make this dream come true. Original signature of the Fiscal Commissioner of the Government of the Granadian Confederation Manuel Maria Mosquera.
