Includes political cartoons on a myriad of mid- to late- 1800s subjects, such as Giuseppe Garibaldi, Taxation of liquor and cigars, but mostly centered on the Civil War. Many of the cartoons depict “John Bull” a caricature that represents England, and the role of the English in the ongoing conflict between the Union and the Confederate States of America. Includes: The Happy Family; The Rebel Chivalry; How the Rebels Win Victories!; John Bull Among His Foreign Relations; and John Bull Between Two Stools. All are in VF condition with few signs of aging. Interesting group of political cartoons from a tumultuous time in American history, with interesting advertisements from the period on the backs of each piece. (20+) ������������������������������������������������������������������ Est. $50-100 EPHEMERA - SLAVERY Alabama 514 514 Alabama 1846 Estate Appraisal Document Listing Slaves and Other Property Alabama, 1846. Handwritten appraisal of the property belonging to the Estate of Charles Buxton, the deceased. This detailed inventory lists Buxton’s goods and properties with their corresponding appraised value, including a number of slaves owned by Buxton. The names of the enslaved people catalogued in the piece are Isaac, Ruben, Jack, Henry, Tammy, Lucy, Diana, Rachel, Cely, Jane, Anderson, Tom, Frank, Vinsent, Sam, Louisa, Matilda, and Nia. Their names and values are listed beside 280 acres of land, 22 chairs, various horses and farm animals, kitchen utensils, and other assorted household goods. The total value of the estate was $6,710.74 (actually miscalculated by 10 cents), and is shown on the back with the signatures of the witnesses and appraisers. Fine condition with significant blue staining and toning, splits have been archivally reinforced. U.S. Produced Japanese Propaganda Leaflet with U.S. 1 Cent Presidential stamp overprinted with the date of occupation, featuring dark blue military clothes, Red handstamp reads “Army Occupation Landing, Oct. 28, ‘45 The Bomber Plant City of Nagoya, Honshu, J. Target of Doolittle’s Raid,” Navy Postage handstamp over green stamp at top right corner. Back features writing in Japanese, purple handstamp that reads “New York, N.Y., U.S.S. Marvin H.
