RN-B1 imprinted revenue stamp at center. “Sample” written in red at center and bottom right, Writing in green on back, and shading over American Exchange National Bank, New York at bottom center. VF condition with toning and a pair of stains at bottom margin. Rare specimen check with imprinted revenue. ABNC. ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $300-450 Pennsylvania 434 434 Western Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, 1875 I/U Check Sized Receipt Dixmont, Pennsylvania, 1875. $65 I/U receipt for the payment of “Medical Attendance and Boarding of Miss S.K. Sampson in full for 13 weeks, 1875 and Clothing in full to Ap. 24, 1875,” Brown text with black handwriting, with a gray underprint of a large institution building and grounds across entire receipt. Fine to VF condition with some small holes and signs of wear along center fold line, and a stain at top left margin. Dixmont State Hospital, founded in 1848 by Dorothea Dix, began as the Insane Dept. of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. This hospital was the first chartered public hospital in Pittsburgh and the first institution in Western Pennsylvania to offer treatment for the insane. ������������������������������������������������������ Est. $120-240 U.S. & Peru 435 435 United States Navy Bill of Exchange, 1870 I/C Historic First Exchange Issued off of Callao, Peru. Callao, Peru and U.S., February 25th, 1870. $2000 I/C First of Exchange from USS ‘Onward.’ Portrait of George Washington at bottom and sailing ship at top with sailor along left side margin. Written Cancelled across face. Onward was launched 3 July 1852 by James O. Curtis at Medford, Massachusetts, for Reed, Wade, and Co., of Boston, Massachusetts, and operated in the merchant service between New York City, Boston, and San Francisco. Purchased by the U.S. Navy at New York City from John Ogden on 9 September 1861, for service in the American Civil War, Onward commissioned at New York Navy Yard on 11 January 1862, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant J. Frederick Nickels in command. The exchange was issued to Commander Milton Haxton and signed by him on the back on Feb, 25th, 1870 where it was evidently issued and endorsed to the Pacific Steam & Navigation Company on February, 1870 who then deposited it at the Bank of Liverpool in in England on April 2nd, 1870. The exchange also has a 1 Pound English “Foreign Bill” adhesive revenue stamp on the back. The corresponding bank of the Exchange-draft listed on the face was Baring Brothers in London. Commander Haxton was in charge of the U.S. steamer Mercedita and part of the North Atlantic Blockading fleet during the Civil War in 1865. Rare U.S. Navy bill of exchange.
