Intaglio printed by the “Treasury Department” (now the BEP), Unissued check sized certificate for subscription to the National Lincoln Monument in Washington D.C. Certificate number 1969. Appears uncirculated but a small 1/2 by 1/4 inch piece missing from the lower left corner of the certificate. Dramatic portrait of Lincoln on the left with Liberty and flames at right- middle and small eagle at bottom. On April 15, 1865, the day President Lincoln died, a group of Springfield citizens formed the National Lincoln Monument Association and spearheaded a drive for funds to construct a memorial or tomb. The subsequent Lincoln Tomb was established, serving as the final resting place of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln; his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln; and three of their four sons, Edward, William, and Thomas. It is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Constructed of granite, the tomb has a single-story rectangular base, surmounted by an obelisk, with a semicircular receiving room entrance-way, on one end, and semicircular crypt or burial-room opposite. Lot of 2 pieces, Both are unissued certificates with date line Virginia City, Montana Territory, 186x. Includes Certificate of Deposit of funds to company (probably gold or gold dust). Black on white, plain form with no vignettes. Also included is a waybill for shipping to the states of “Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Montana, and Washington”, most probably by stage coach. Small print on bottom lists information and that the company is not liable for loss, damage or detention due to “Civil or Military Authority, depredations of Indians, ....” Both are in VF to XF condition with light toning on edges or in the middle in a couple of small areas. The Congregation of Retreat of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic congregation founded in 1678 under the name of the Institute of Retreat, at Quimper, in Brittany, by Mademoiselle Claude-Thérèse de Kerméno under the direction of the Jesuit Father Huby.
