April 13th, 1853. Several page, handwritten letter from Warren Burton to the widow of Doctor Nichols, a very dear friend, relative, and mentor to the author. The writing is expressive and emotional, discussing at length Dr. Nichols’ kindness, generosity, and warmth. Burton met Nichols as a child, when the doctor pulled out a pair of teeth that were troubling the young boy. Burton discusses the subsequent visits he had with the doctor throughout his life, “I used to admire his philosophic tastes & also especially his poetic spirit. He gave me my first distinct desire to study Botany; speaking to me of the usefulness & the charm of the science, & quoting poetry about flowers with great enthusiasm.” He goes on to write, “According to my own recollection, it was the large, the loving, the world-embracing spirit of my friend Dr. Nichols, which first gave me a distinct impression that there was such a principal, such a sentiment, such a life as is expressed by the word Philanthropy. I love his memory; rather I love him, for here, just within the veil, close by, in human form, body & limb, a perfect human organization, he is now. By God’s leave he shall come near you to comfort your widowed heart.” Black handwriting on off-blue paper, Fine-VF condition with very faint splitting along fold lines at center. Incredible letter with beautiful sentiments from the heart. Broadside, 6 x 12 inches, Advertisement for the Emmet Club’s regular Sunday family excursion to Martinez, touching at Vallejo and Benicia both ways, on the new steamer “Petaluma.” The excursion was to leave Clay Street at 10 AM and would return at 7:30 PM. The Emmet Club was likely a familial or Irish-related organization related to Robert Emmet (4 March 1778 - 20 September 1803), an Irish Republican, orator and rebel leader. Robert Emmet’s older brother, Thomas Addis Emmet emigrated to the United States shortly after Robert’s execution. He eventually served as the New York State Attorney General. His descendants (who included the prominent American portrait painters Lydia Field Emmet, Rosina Emmet Sherwood, Ellen Emmet Rand, and Jane Emmet de Glehn) helped advance his standing among the Irish diaspora. Emmet has various namesakes throughout the United States, including a statue in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Est. $200-400
