New York, 1869. 2 pieces: Issued and approved bill from the Manhattan Oil Company for $25.80, for product purchased by the Naugatuck Rail Road Company, Black text and mostly handwritten, Paid Naugatuck R.R. handstamp in blue at center, Fine condition with signs of wear and fragile fold lines; and an Issued Check from the Naugatuck R.R. Company, for the full total of $25.80, with an uncut note at bottom confirming the payment, Black text with Sperm whale fighting against sailors at left, Adhesive internal revenue stamp in orange at center with Manhattan Oil Company handstamp on top, Fine condition with some toning and glue staining. The Naugatuck Railroad was chartered May 1845 and organized February 1848. On May 15, 1849, the first section opened, from a junction with the just-completed New York and New Haven Railroad north to Seymour. The oil provided by the Manhattan Oil Co. was used to lubricate railroad machinery.
