James Fisk Jr. (April 1, 1835 - January 7, 1872) - known variously as “Big Jim”, “Diamond Jim”, and “Jubilee Jim” - was an American stockbroker and corporate executive who has been referred to as one of the “robber barons” of the Gilded Age. Though Fisk was admired by the working class of New York and the Erie Railroad, he achieved much ill-fame for his role in Black Friday in 1869, where he and his partner Jay Gould befriended the unsuspecting President Ulysses S. Grant in an attempt to use the President’s good name in a scheme to corner the gold market in New York City. Several years later Fisk was murdered by a disgruntled business associate. Morse Ephemera Group Lot, ca. 1877-1980s Group of 6 items, all related to the life of Samuel F. B. Morse: 1965 Envelope Cover commemorating the centenary of the International Telecommunication Union, featuring portraits of Alexander Graham Bell and Morse, also includes a commemorative adhesive stamp and a Washington, D.C. handstamp; Pair of unused postcards featuring photographs of Locust Grove, the Young-Morse National Historic Site in Poughkeepsie, New York; Cuban Cigar Co. colorful and embossed label, 9 x 6.75 inches, with side-by-side portraits of a young and old Professor Morse; American Cable Co. 1877 25 Shares spuriously filled out, Capital Stock Certificate, S/N 103; and a 6-page Biography of Samuel F. B. Morse from the Young-Morse Historic Site, printed in 1982. All are in VF condition. Samuel Finley Breese Morse (April 27, 1791 - April 2, 1872) was an American inventor and painter. After having established his reputation as a portrait painter, in his middle age Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. He was a co-developer of Morse code and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy. Based on our evaluation, we estimate the pages are dated mid 14th to 16th centuries, but it needs confirmation. 2 vertical pieces mounted on thin board, Possible Halachik book. The Hebrew phrase “ ערמ ביכש ” is repeated often, that means someone who is very sick. So it could be a text referring to how ill people should be treated. The text is not printed in modern Hebrew, but in Talmudic Hebrew. The script used it known as the traditional K’tav Ashuri script, which is to say, the Assyrian one. The Jews adopted the Assyrian script after returning to Israel from Babylon, around 587-698 BCE. The Torah has been written in this script ever since. Almost in good to VG condition with evidence of worm holes, wear and stains. ������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $200-360 EPHEMERA - JUDICIAL & LEGAL New York 409 409 Marine Court of the City of New York, 1873 Order of Arrest Document New York City, 1873. Handwritten, several-page document from the Marine Court of New York City, regarding the case of Charles H. Tuthill against John Eble. Handwriting difficult to read, Black text on lined paper, Fine condition with glue staining at top and splitting along fold lines. The Marine Court was initially known as the Justices’ Court and was established in New York City in 1807. In 1813, it became a court of record, was required to hold its sessions in City Hall and was awarded a court seal. In 1817, the court was granted jurisdiction to confiscate ships and vessels for marine debts, and in 1819, the court was renamed the Marine Court of the City of New York. The Marine Court’s jurisdiction included monetary claims below a designated amount and unlimited jurisdiction in cases involving master and mariner. In 1846, its jurisdiction was expanded to the trial of actions for assault and battery, false imprisonment and libel and slander. By chapter 38 of the Laws of 1883, the name of the court was changed to the “City Court of New York”, and the laws relating to the marine court, the justices, clerks, and attaches were continued by the City Court of New York. ����������������������� Est. $35-60
