New York, 1841. 3 x 7.75 inch off-white ribbon on a silk with black print, featuring an eagle with “Our Nation Mourns a Hero Gone” ribbon at top, with a portrait of Harrison underneath with flags, scythe, and an hourglass. Text underneath reads “Gen. William Henry Harrison. Born at Berkley, Virginia, Feb. 9th, 1773. Inaugurated President of the United States, March 4th, 1841. Died April 4th, 1841 Aged 68 Years, 1 Mo., 15 Days. The melancholy occasion, solemnized at New York. April 10th, 1841,” with “Fire Department” underneath and an illustration of an early fire pumper truck at bottom. The back features a biography, highlighting the important deeds and details of Harrison’s life. William Henry Harrison (February 9, 1773 - April 4, 1841) was an American military officer and politician who served as the ninth president of the United States for 31 days in 1841, becoming the first president to die in office and the shortest-serving U.S. president in history. His death sparked a brief constitutional crisis regarding succession to the presidency, as at the time the U.S. Constitution did not make it entirely clear what should be done in the event of a president’s death.
