Archives International Auctions - Sale 71 76 November 23, 2021 Archives International Auctions www.archivesinternational.com Peru and U.S. 398 398 ABNC, Continental BNC, and Peruvian Agent 1866 Correspondence About a Broken Business Deal U.S. and Peru, May to June, 1866. 21 pages of hand-written correspondence neatly bound into a portfolio. Historic archival correspondence file with letters from ABNC, CBNC and an agent from Peru who was based in NYC. The agent of the Government of Peru, Mariano Alvarez, made a verbal agreement with Edward Dunbar of the Continental Bank Note Co. to print revenue stamps for Peru for the price of $3,800 for 6 million stamps. Alvarez’s secretary delivered the models and instructions for the stamp design to CBNC. A couple of days later, after CBNC began the job, Alvarez sent a note stating that he was having the work done with a competitor (ABNC) for $3,500. One document in the lot, handwritten by Dunbar on CBNC letterhead, states that “Alvarez has been guilty of a most unwarrantable breach of faith - one that never will be sanctioned by the Peruvian Government.” Dunbar was extremely upset at the turn of events, and wrote several fiery letters, one of which with racist undertones against Spanish South Americans. It is easily discernable in his rushed handwriting the high emotions Dunbar was experiencing while dealing with the fallout. Extremely fascinating and detailed letters, in Spanish and in English. Also includes a copy of the signed agreement with ABNC, as well as other handwritten documents which offers a paper trail of the events. Extremely rare Security Printer Correspondence that provides an insight into the backstabbing and treachery that went on in business, even in the printing industry. Toning, small edge tears on some documents but mostly fine to VF condition. Bound by string together on the left side.
