Black text with two-headed Russian Imperial eagle at top center. Both sides have an embossed seal reading “Russian Loan 1822 Contracted by N.M. Rothschild,” with Nathan Mayer Rothschild’s signature at right margin. Some splitting along fold lines, as well as staining, still in Fine condition considering its age. Nathan Mayer Rothschild (16 September 1777 – 28 July 1836) was a German Jewish banker, businessman and financier. Born in Germany, he was the third of five sons of Gutle and Mayer Amschel Rothschild, and was of the second generation of the Rothschild banking dynasty. In 1822, the date this document was signed, all five brothers were granted the title of Baron by the Emperor of Germany. Once the wealthiest man on earth, Nathan Mayer was the richest among the Rothschilds. By the time of his death, his personal net worth amounted to 0.62% of British national income. As the most accomplished of his brothers, Nathan Mayer Rothschild solidified the Rothschild banking family as a major power in European and thus world affairs.
