Group of 9 reproduced portraits of Andrew Johnson, many from a likeness from a recent photograph and painted by Alonzo Chappel. Also included is a portrait of Andrew Johnson’s wife, Eliza McCardle Johnson, as well as a newspaper article repeating a speech Johnson made upon receipt of the news of the fall of Richmond. All are in Fine condition with some damage to margins, toning, and other general signs of wear. Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed the presidency as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Johnson was a Democrat who ran with Lincoln on the National Union ticket, coming to office as the Civil War concluded. He favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union without protection for the former slaves. This led to conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1868. He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote. Many were created from the original painting by Chappel, and were printed by Johnson, Fry & Co., Publishers. All are in Fine condition with some toning and damage to margins. James Knox Polk (November 2, 1795 - June 15, 1849) was the 11th president of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849. He previously was the Speaker of the House of Representatives (1835-1839) and Governor of Tennessee (1839-1841). A mentee of Andrew Jackson, he was a member of the Democratic Party and an advocate of Jacksonian democracy. Polk is chiefly known for extending the territory of the United States through the Mexican-American War; during his presidency, the United States expanded significantly with the annexation of the Republic of Texas, the Oregon Territory, and the Mexican Cession following the American victory in the Mexican- American War. Group of over 15 print portraits of Millard Fillmore, many taken from an original photograph, with the original portrait painted by Alonzo Chappel. Includes duplicates of the same piece, printed by Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, New York. Also included is a portrait of Fillmore’s wife, Abigail Fillmore. All are in Fine condition with some damage to margins, toning, and other signs of wear. Millard Fillmore ( January 7, 1800 - March 8, 1874) was the 13th president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853, the last to be a member of the Whig Party while in the White House. A former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Upstate New York, Fillmore was elected as the 12th vice president in 1848, and succeeded to the presidency in July 1850 upon the death of U.S. President Zachary Taylor. Fillmore was instrumental in the passing of the Compromise of 1850, a bargain that led to a brief truce in the battle over the expansion of slavery.
