Handwritten letter from the Overseers of the Poor of Holland, addressed to Alden Bradford, Secretary of the Commonwealth (of Massachusetts), likely for compensation from the state. Outlines the number and ages of all the “paupers” that have been “maintained in and by the District of Holland” for the last five years, as well as the total average expense for their care. All indigents listed were cared for in the Poor House in Holland, Massachusetts. Dark brown handwriting on off-white paper, remains of a red seal at center right, Fine condition for its age. Caring for the poor and dependent was considered a public duty in early New England. They were often situated on the grounds of a poor farm on which able-bodied residents were required to work. Alden Bradford (17 November 1765 - 26 October 1843) was an American politician, clergyman and author who served as the 5th Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Born in Duxbury, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard in 1786 and received a degree of LL.D. there. He was then ordained as a Congregational church pastor, serving in Wiscasset, Maine. Glascow, Scotland and Philadelphia, PA. 3 page document with Bold American eagle atop Consulate cover page, Glasgow. Signed by Alexander Thomson. Refers to export of good from Glasgow to Philadelphia via Liverpool. 2 printed pages, one handwritten page and a stampless cover page. All fastened together with a ribbon and held in place with the US Consular seal on the first page. 1839. Lot of 3 pieces, all partially typeset and handwritten: 1782 Consolidated 3% Annuities Certificate, VF condition; 1808 Reduced 3% Annuities Certificate, VF condition; and 1832 Reduced 3 Pounds, 10 Shillings Annuities Certificate, VF condition. In 1751, Parliament passed an act which consolidated all existing British government stocks into a single issue, with a fixed interest rate of 3 percent per annum. These “Consolidated Annuities,” also known as consols or perpetual bonds, had no maturity date, and instead were redeemable, on call, by the government. “Reduced Annuities,” popularly referred to as three per cent reduced annuities, resulted from the attempt of the British government to capitalize on even lower rates of interest in other markets. This allowed the government to borrow money at a lower total interest rate than would have been otherwise possible. (3) ( John E. Parchment document with type-set print and handwriting, 7.5 x 9.5 inches. “Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on his Majesty’s Hereditary Revenue of Excise, containing the Sum of É due unto me for one quarter of a Year ended at ... upon the Yearly Sum of ... granted unto me by Assignment from ... out of the Yearly Rent or Sum of ... payable unto the said ... out of the said Revenue, by virtue of his Majesty’s Letters Patents, under the Great Seal of England, bearing date the ...” This document is an unused receipt, which would have been used for the repayment of loans or the payment of taxes. The monarch at the time was Charles II, King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. He was King of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, and King of England, Scotland and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685.
