Handwritten appraisal of the property belonging to the Estate of Charles Buxton, the deceased. This detailed inventory lists Buxton’s goods and properties with their corresponding appraised value, including a number of slaves owned by Buxton. The names of the enslaved people catalogued in the piece are Isaac, Ruben, Jack, Henry, Tammy, Lucy, Diana, Rachel, Cely, Jane, Anderson, Tom, Frank, Vinsent, Sam, Louisa, Matilda, and Nia. Their names and values are listed beside 280 acres of land, 22 chairs, various horses and farm animals, kitchen utensils, and other assorted household goods. The total value of the estate was $6,710.74 (actually miscalculated by 10 cents), and is shown on the back with the signatures of the witnesses and appraisers. Fine condition with significant blue staining and toning, splits have been archivally reinforced. Black text with black border, seals depicted at left and right. Fine condition with some toning and fold lines. American Freeman was an anti-slavery publication that was affiliated with the abolitionist Liberty Party. “The American Freeman,” a newspaper for the abolition of slavery, was the first newspaper published in Waukesha in 1844. Handwritten document from Tom McTague, Warden, to the Territorial Auditor, regarding prisoners which have been delivered into his custody from the Sheriff of Lewis & Clark County. The ledger below includes a full account of the prisoner’s name, sentence location, date of sentence, crime, and term of sentence. VF condition. The Montana State Prison is a men’s correctional facility of the Montana Department of Corrections in unincorporated Powell County, Montana, about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Deer Lodge. The “Old Prison” served as the Montana Territorial Prison from its creation in 1871 until Montana achieved statehood in 1889, then continued as the primary penal institution for the State of Montana until 1979. Lot of 3 pieces, all are 2 page leaflets printed on front and back, produced by the U.S. Office of War Information Psychological Warfare Team, and are in a foreign language. One is in red and black, featuring a U.S. soldier with a major bomber formation walking between globes, right side with Nazi surrender, the left side with Japanese flag; One is black and purple, depicting a soldier laying down daydreaming of his wife and child; and the other is in black and green and features a trio of men and a cow. VF condition. Leaflets such as these were disseminated during World War II with the aim of damaging enemy morale.
