Spies, Druggist New York, NY. 1815. Extremely early printed and partially handwritten receipt for George Suffern, accounting for goods purchased from John I. Spies, Druggist, for a total of $20.31. The store was located in No. 197 Greenwich Street, corner of Vesey Street, New York City. Signed at bottom by John I. Spies. Fine condition with some toning and staining. George Suffern is likely the son of John Suffern, first Rockland County Judge, and community leader. John Suffern, first Rockland County judge, 1798–1806, settled near the base of the Ramapo Mountains in 1773, and called the place New Antrim, after his home in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. New Antrim’s location was considered strategically important in the Revolutionary War because it was at an important crossroads near Ramapo Pass. General George Washington and other important military leaders used John Suffern’s home as headquarters when they were in the area. The town of Suffern, New York, is named after John Suffern. Document issued to Daniel Kidder which certified his 1/16th ownership of the Schooner called Helen, for the price of $973.32, paid to Asa P. Morse of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Asa Porter Morse (1818-1906), the son of Daniel and Sarah Morse, moved to Boston in 1840 and began business life as a bookkeeper in the house of Hayward & Morse, who were involved with West India trade. After accumulating enough capital to start a business for himself, Morse continued working in commerce and trade and moved to Cambridge in 1845. He served as a member of the Cambridge School Board, as an alderman, and as a state senator in 1879-1880.
