In 1887, New Orleans businessman Toby Hart secures a franchise for the city in the Southern League – the New Orleans Pelicans. Their first game is played on April 17th, 1887 at Sportsman’s Park. Tom Brennan is the manager and Abner Powell is the team’s captain. In 1910, the Pelicans win their second Southern Association pennant behind the hitting of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the pitching of Pat Paige, Otto Hess, and Gordon Hickman. They finish the season with a 87 – 53 record. The Pelicans become a Boston Red Sox farm club (1946-1947). In 1955, the Pelicans finish in 6th place with a 76 – 75 slate, despite a standout season for Danny Kravitz. In 1960, the Pelican franchise is sold to Little Rock, Arkansas with New Orleans becoming the largest city in America without a professional baseball team. Rare Louisiana Baseball Stock Certificate. Club member Thomas Burke took two gold medals (the 100m and 400m) at the inaugural Modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. His results spurred the New York Athletic Club, entering its fourth decade of existence, to organize greater representation at subsequent Games. At that time, the Club’s Captain was Charles Sherrill; he took charge of the US Olympic squad for Paris in 1900, a Games at which the NYAC claimed 22 medals in track and field and swimming. This was the NYAC’s first true stamp on the Olympic movement, a stamp that is now indelible. The New York Athletic Club is a private social club and athletic club in New York.
