Pennsylvania, 1872, $1780.69, Certificate of Adjudicated Claim for War Damages Issued and Uncancelled, Black print with black ornate border Pennsylvania seal top center and portrait of Ulysses S. Grant bottom center, S/N 159. Fine to VF condition with creases from folding, ABNC. In 1849, after military service in the Mexican War, President James Polk appointed John Geary postmaster of San Francisco. In 1850, he was elected that city’s first mayor. President Pierce appointed him governor of the controversial Kansas Territory in 1856, where he served for six months. Geary County, Kansas, was renamed in 1869 for John Geary. Geary was a general throughout the Civil War, serving at Cedar Mountain, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg and was wounded several times. At the battle of Wauhatchie, Tennessee, Jefferson Davis ordered his six thousand Confederate troops to attack Geary’s 1,500. During the battle, Geary’s son Edward died in his arms but Geary won the battle. After Sherman’s destruction of Atlanta, Geary accepted the peaceful surrender of Savannah, Georgia, and became the military governor of the city in December 1864. Governor Geary died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 53 on February 8, 1873. The Ogden Sugar Company was incorporated on December 6, 1897 at the Weber Club in Ogden, Utah. Directors included David Eccles as president. They refined sugar beets. Eccles was a Mormon who was also the first Millionaire in Utah. He made his fortune in railroad and related industries in Oregon and Utah.
