Group of production Proofs for St. Louis, Wichita and Western Railway Company bond, including: $1000 Progress Proof 6% First Mortgage Coupon Bond in black and white, printed on thin paper and mounted on cardstock, approval initials at bottom, coupons attached on back, also in black and white; Proof back of bond with coupons attached in green, printed on thin paper and in Fine condition with damage to margins, approval initials throughout; Also included is a handwritten document, several pages and glued together at top, which provides the text intended to be printed on bonds, with information such as percentage, dates, etc.; Final piece is an ABNC plate printing order form, filled out with handwriting, includes details such as color, text, number of coupons, is in Fine condition and has been split in half, with very fragile fold lines. Kentucky..... 1882. 2 Shares I/C Capital Stock Certificate #21, Black text with black border, small illustration of train at center. VF condition, POCs, and staining at left where counterfoil attached. Issued to and signed by John Echols (1823-1896), who was a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. After the war, Echols resumed the practice of law in Staunton, Virginia. He helped select the members of the Committee of Nine, a group of state leaders who worked to ensure that the state be readmitted into the Union and former Confederates could once again hold political office. He went on to become president of the Staunton National Valley Bank, and also served as the Receiver and General Manager of the bankrupt Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern Railroad. The back is signed by Echols with the paragraph that the stock certificate is being transferred to C.P. Huntington. ��������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $110-220 Louisiana 935 935 Tehuantepec Company. 1853 I/U Historic Panama Predecessor Bond Louisiana, 1853. 250 Pounds Sterling I/U 7% Coupon Bond, S/N 712, Black text with black border and red underprint, Louisiana state seal at top center flanked by allegorical women. Vignettes frame the border of the certificate including a ship, train and allegorical woman. All coupons attached at bottom of certificate. XF to Uncirculated condition. The Tehuantepec Company was formed as a result of a grant given to Don Jose de Goray by in 1842 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the President of the Republic of Mexico. The grant stated the purpose of the company was to open “a line of communication...between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.” Through a combination of canals, railroads and steam-carriages, the Tehuantepec Company would provide a fast, commercially feasible link between the two oceans opening a profitable Asiatic trade via San Francisco and Tehuantepec. Support of the concept was widespread and included Judah Benjamin, President Fillmore, Daniel Webster and numerous other notables. Unfortunately, the company dissolved amid a rivalry between the promoters and ultimately, financial failure. An attempt at resurrecting the company was begun with four rival groups claiming ownership to de Goray’s original grant in 1842. Group of 20, all the same: Odd Shares I/C Capital Stock Certificate, Black text with black border, Rudimentary locomotive at top center, allegorical women at top left and right.
