This land was sold for $60.13, and the patent was signed by the Governor of Indiana at the time, Oliver P. Morton. Black text with black border, green seal at bottom left corner. Fine condition with some splitting and holes. Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton (August 4, 1823 – November 1, 1877), commonly known as Oliver P. Morton, was a U.S. Republican Party politician from Indiana. Red specimen overprints, 0000 serial numbers, POCs. Fine condition, ABNC. The Pittsburgh and Allegheny Drove Yard Company was chartered in 1884, and in December of that year, the first tracts of land on Herr’s Island were purchased for the stockyards. Linked to the Pennsylvania and the Baltimore and Ohio railroads by the Pittsburgh Junction Railroad, the Herr’s Island stockyards became a significant point of sale and resting place for livestock in transit between the Midwest (Chicago) and eastern markets (Philadelphia and New York City). The island is now a showcase project of urban redevelopment for the City of Pittsburgh.
