The advertising postcard was for Tide Water Oil Company, “Whose product was selected to lubricate the giant ship” with a drawing of the Hindenburg floating over the ocean, Red German cancellation handstamps and a black Hamburg circular handstamp dated April 4, 1936 tie a 50 Pfennig Deutsche Luftpost green Zeppelin stamp to the cover. Archival corrections are made on the exchange and on the counterfoil on the left with production department handstamps on the back. Red specimen overprints and POC’s. VF to Choice VF condition. Old exchange design from the 1860’s reused at a later date. Burlington, VT. Lot includes of 109 pieces, all I/C checks from Merchants National Bank, located in Burlington, Vermont. Some of the checks have black text with green background, the rest have black text with a large eagle depicted at top center. Fine condition, most dating from 1918. 109 pieces. Merchants Bank was organized in 1849 and took a national charter in 1865 becoming The Merchants National Bank of Burlington, Vermont. Jason ( Jay) Gould (May 27, 1836 – December 2, 1892) was an American railroad magnate and financial speculator who is generally identified as one of the Robber barons of the Gilded Age. His sharp and often unscrupulous business practices made him one of the wealthiest men of the late nineteenth century. Gould was an unpopular figure during his life and remains controversial.
