(From the Allen Berk Collection) Est. $140-250 Ephemera - Historic France 777 777 French East India Company Lot of 2 Pamphlet-Documents, 1749 and 1767 Pair. France.... Lot of 2 documents, Includes 1768 printed 3 page text booklet regarding the French East India Company and dealings with Parliament and the King of France; and, and 1749 pamphlet-booklet dealing with the establishment of the Hotel de la Compagnie des Indes à Paris, all in French. The French East India Company was a commercial Imperial enterprise, founded in 1664 to compete with the English (later British) and Dutch East India companies in the East Indies. The Company was not able to maintain itself financially, and it was abolished in 1769, about 20 years before the French Revolution. King Louis XVI issued a 1769 edict that required the Company to transfer to the state all its properties, assets and rights, which were valued at 30 million livres. The Hotel de la Compagnie des Indes à Paris is classified as a historic monument and today it houses the National Library of France. (2) (Ex. John E. Discharge Certificate issued to Antoine Lafond (31 years of age) by the French War Commissioner, allowing him to leave his calvary regiment, the Royal Dragons (Dragoons). At top center is illustrated the French royal crest, and to the left is a red wax seal that is difficult to read and has some damage. The permanent discharge was approved by the commander of the Royal Dragoons regiment, David Maurice Champouliès de Barrau de Muratel (1742-1827), who later went on to become a general in the French Royal Army during the Revolution. This document is fascinating because it was issued in February of 1791, when the turmoil of the French Revolution was well underway. As Lafond was a member of the Royal Dragoons, and this document was approved by the Lieutenant General of the King’s armies, it is possible that this regiment saw, or went on to see, some action against revolutionary forces in this period. Very Rare and unique piece from Revolutionary-era France, enriched with military history. Est. $250-500 New York 779 779 New York City Street Department Surveyor’s Certificate Issued 1866 near the New York Public Library Property New York City...... 1866.
