Unique group lot related to printing and engraving in the United States. The American Bank Note Company was originally a major worldwide engraver of national currency and postage stamps. Today it is ABCorp, an American corporation providing secure payment, retail and ID cards, vital record and transaction documents, systems and services to governments and financial institutions, and is one of the largest producers of plastic transaction cards in the world. Lot of 3 pieces, Image of Spaceman, scientist with beaker and deep sea diver with image of stars and planet earth behind them. Includes original Photo-Model of the final design as a watercolor or pen and ink and 2 different progress proof stages of the engraving, one partially engraved and the second close to be complete. New York, 1851. 1 Share of $1000 I/U Stock Certificate, S/N 182, Black text with black border and red underprint, Horses driving goods by steamship at top center. Cut out cancelled, Signatures have been crossed-out. Issued to Freeman Rawdon. Rawdon was the younger brother of Ralph Rawson, and both brothers established engraving and printing firms in the early 1800s. Each partnered with other engravers—Ralph with Vistus Balch of Williamstown, Massachusetts (ca. 1818-1822) and then with Asahel Clark to form Rawdon, Clark, & Co. At the same time, Freeman partnered with Neziah Wright in 1828, establishing Rawdon, Wright, & Co. of New York City. On March 1, 1832, their two firms merged to become Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Company. Tracy R. Edson joined the company as a business administrator at the time of this merger. Edson’s name was added to the company’s title in 1847, and the subsequent Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson won the United States government contract to print postage stamps (1847-1851). Eventually, the company merged with other firms in 1858, and the new consolidated company was named the American Bank Note Company. ����������������������������������� Est. $325-500 765 765 Tiffany & Co.
