Benjamin Holladay (October 14, 1819 – July 8, 1887) was an American transportation businessman responsible for creating the Overland Stage to California during the height of the 1849 California Gold Rush. New York, NY. $1, East River Bank, Proof vignette cut to shape extremely precisely of construction scene found on the $1, ca.1850’s obsolete note listed as SENC in Haxby. Incredible and extremely precise skill went into cutting this vignette fromwhere it was taken. The church spires, construction scaffolding, buildings crane are perfectly cut and then glued to the thin card. Engraved by Baldwin Adams & Co. who I assume placed the vignette on card to be used in the future. XF condition with very slight toning. BA&C0. ��������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $140-280 523 523 Eastman National Business College May 22, 1865 Graduating Class List Poughkeepsie, New York, 1865. 12.75 x 10 inch colorized list of men who belonged to the 131st Graduating Class from the Eastman National Business College, located in Poughkeepsie, New York. Lists the men as well as their hometowns, with John M. Wilcox fromNew Brunswick, N.J. highlighted in gold ink, as this piece may have been issued to him. Black text with ornate header, with “Teach your boys that which they will practice when they become men” surrounding with “Excelsior” with start at top center. Fine condition with slight rip at top and bottom. The Eastman Business College was founded in 1859 by Harvey G. Eastman, and was for a time one of the largest commercial schools in the United States. Rather than merely being a theoretical school, students gained practical experience in the business arts by actually performing the tasks that would be expected of them in their working careers, a novel approach at the time.
