New Orleans, Louisiana and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1847. One-page ledger of a printing order form from the New Orleans Canal and Banking Company. Includes products and pricing, with the final tally coming to $1,140.31. The order was for 5000 Impressions of $5.5.5.5; $10.10.10.10; $20.20.20.20; 3000 Impressions of $50.50.50.50; 2000 Impressions of $100.100.100.100; and 500 Impressions of $50.1000 Sheets (all sheets with printed backs) for a total of 10,125 sheets on “Bank Note Paper”. The engraving company who completed the order was Toppan, Carpenter & Co., a Philadelphia-based engraving entity that engraved and printed some of the most notable stamps in U.S. philately. By 1850, the company was named Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., and in 1851 the company submitted its bid for the United States postage stamp contract. When Casilear left and the company name reverted to Toppan, Carpenter & Co., the remaining partners merged with several other firms (including Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson) to form the American Bank Note Company. Toppan, Carpenter & Co. had a 22.4% share in this new company.
