Granada, Nicaragua. 1st October 1856, Issued $25, P-S131 (Unlisted date), Issued banknote, black printing on light yellow paper, 9 x 7 inches, S/N 815, Issued to W.M. Allen for $25 for Military Services, signed by Wm. Walker as President of the Republic; also signed by the Minister of the Hacienda, F. Ferrer and also signed by D.?? Martin as Paymaster with Allen’s endorsement on the back. Fine to Choice Fine condition but there is a strong horizontal fold in the middle with splits on the edges and small holes due to folding and wear, the top and bottom margins are rough due to handling. William Walker (May 8, 1824 – September 12, 1860) was an American physician, lawyer, journalist, and mercenary who organized several private military expeditions into Mexico and Central America with the intention of establishing English-speaking colonies under his personal control, an enterprise then known as “filibustering”. Walker usurped the presidency of Nicaragua in July 1856 and ruled until May 1, 1857, when he was forced out of the presidency and the country by a coalition of Central American armies. He returned in an attempt to re-establish his control of the region and was captured and executed by the government of Honduras in 1860. Historic Nicaragua Fiscal document with only 2 previous examples graded in the PMG census, this being the third if graded and only one example on record of this denomination being offered which was at a R.M. Smythe Auction in June 1998, grading in XF condition where it sold for $8,250. ( John E.
