United States Bounty Land Grant issued in favor of Thomas Westbrook, a Private in Captain Riley’s Company, Georgia Militia, for 120 acres in Springfield, Missouri. This document declares that the tract of land described has been turned over to a Mr. Nolan, who most likely purchased it from Westbrook. This was done in accordance with an act of Congress passed on March 3, 1855, entitled “An Act in addition to certain Acts granting Bounty Land to certain Officers and Soldiers who have been engaged in the Military Service of the United States.” Signed and sealed by secretarial signature of the President of the United States at the time, James Buchanan”. Black text with an American flag at top left corner. Fine- VF condition. James Buchanan Jr. (1791-1868) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 15th president of the United States (1857–1861). He previously served as Secretary of State (1845–1849) and represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He was a states’ rights advocate, and minimized the role of the federal government in the nation’s final years of slavery. Historians condemn Buchanan for not addressing the issue of slavery, and not forestalling the secession of the southern states over it, and he is consistently rated by scholars as among the nation’s worst presidents. His presidential successor was Abraham Lincoln. Just weeks after Lincoln was elected as President, southern states began seceding from the U.S., and the American Civil War started. Est. $100-180 600 600 General Land Office, 1860 Bounty Land Grant for 160 Acres Springfield, Missouri and Washington, D.C., 1860.
