Established in 1927 under German management, and with Kurt Lindenblatt as its governor, it was to be the vehicle for Germany’s economic expansion into Persia. By World War II, Reza Shah’s Iran and Hitler’s Germany had developed close commercial ties. But this was a relationship that came to an abrupt end with the Allied invasion of Iran in 1941. Thereafter, the Bank came to be known by its Persian name – the Bank Melli-e Iran – which became the country’s Central Bank until 1960 and continues as a commercial bank to this day.
