Signed by company President William Mahone, an American civil engineer, railroad executive, Confederate States Army general, and Virginia politician. William Mahone Virginia, ND (1870s). 16 Shares I/U Capital Stock Certificate #118, Black text with green border, Train passing through countryside at top center. VF condition but barely cut into the left border, USIR Imprinted Revenue in middle, Continental Bank Note Co. Signed by William Mahone (1826-1895) as president of the company. Mahone was an American civil engineer, railroad executive, Confederate States Army general, and Virginia politician. In the American Civil War, Mahone was pro-secession and served as a general in the southern Confederate States Army. After the war, he returned to railroad building, merging three lines to form the important Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad (AM&O), headquartered in Lynchburg. The AM&O was promoted as a trade link to the west, and further expansion was envisioned with the goal of increasing Virginia’s Ohio Valley and Mississippi Valley commerce.
