Compton & Downey Autographs. Los Angeles, California, 1872, $500, issued and spindle cancelled, young woman on top right, ornate title, S/N 333, Issued to and signed by Griffith Dickenson Compton and signed by John G. Downey as President. Griffith Dickenson Compton led a group of thirty pioneers to the Los Angeles area in 1867. They traveled by wagon train from Stockton, California. They named the area Comptonville which was shortened to Compton. In 1888 the city of Compton was incorporated. John Gately Downey was an Irish-American politician and the seventh Governor of California from January 14, 1860 to January 10, 1862. Downey, California is named in Downey’s honor. His land company owned the land that was subdivided to create the town in the 1870s. Downey’s major highlight is having the third McDonalds ever opened (in 1953) and it is the oldest McDonalds still in business, which was 5 miles from where the cataloger was raised. ��������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $200-300 Catalogs & Numismatic Literature United States 1449 1449Republican Candidate for President, 1872 U.S. Grant Political Pin with Medal. 1872, Gold (brass) Bald Eagle with arrows and olive branch in its talons attached to silver colored (aluminum) coin, 15/16th’s of an inch with President Grant on face and Grants political slogans and 1872 date on back. ABNC. ����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $60-120 Alaska 1451 1451Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909 Silk Handkerchief Alaska (Held in Washington) Souvenir handkerchief in the middle of the design is the circular Exposition logo set against the image of the globe. Beneath the globe is the United States seal with an eagle and a scroll with the words `Alaska Yukon Pacific/Exposition/1909.` beneath eagle. To the left of the eagle is the image of a person in a canoe and a polar bear on a glacier looking in the distance to the Exposition, which is radiating with light. To the right of the eagle is the image of two Exposition buildings with an Indian facing them, sitting on the ground and smoking a pipe. In the background of the design is the image of the city of Seattle and Mount Rainer. The fairgrounds became the campus of the University of Washington. Lot of 4 notes, includes a quartet of different polymer advertising “100” DuraNote test/advertising notes, with the same oil rig subject on the front, and horses pulling wagons on the back. All with different security features on the right including Maple leaf clear window, crisscross clear windows; clear window with multicolor globe, and triangle window. All are in Choice to Gem Uncirculated or better. These were pioneer polymer notes that were produced as an experiment to replace paper for paper money.
