Document issued to Samuel Wallis by the Proprietaries Land-Office of Pennsylvania for “three hundred acres of land on the north side of the Chestnut Ridge...” Wallis was a Philadelphia merchant and served as a land agent for the Holland Land Co., a group of Dutch capitalists that also advanced large sums of money to Robert Morris, one of the major financiers of the American Revolution. Samuel Wallis was also the largest landowner in the area at the time, with this document being a testament to that history. Document has also been signed by witnesses. Document issued to Solomon Maxfield by the Land-Office of Pennsylvania for a “grant of a tract of land containing four hundred acres situate on the head water of a large branch of the Towanda Creek...in the county of Northumberland or Luzerne.” Solomon Maxfield was a merchant from New Castle, Delaware. This region would later become a center of anthracite coal mining after the turn of the 19th century. This document was printed and sold by Joseph Cruikshank, and is in fine condition.
