Aktieselskapet Hektor was a whaling company, and in 1912 was issued with a license to establish a shore-based whaling station. The company set up a permanent base on Deception Island, located in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, with the safest harbors in Antarctica. This was the only successful shore-based industry ever to operate in Antarctica, reaping high profits in its first years.
