Dominican Republic. Pair of Progress Proofs. 1 in black and white and the other in full color with the color out of proper registration. The central vignette of the Dominican Republic bank note depicts Columbus with a Native American and was engraved in 1968 by Charles Burt. The vignette at left, entitled “Capstan” was the work of Frederick Girsch and Charles Burt. “Industry” the vignette at the right, was engraved for National Bank Note Company, a predecessor of the American Bank Note Company. POCs, VF condition. Giesecke Devrient supplied currency during the inflation in the Weimar Republic in the 1920s, one of the most prominent cases of hyperinflation. It also printed tickets to the 1936 Olympics in Germany and did business with Spain under Franco. Its role in facilitating the destruction of the economy of Zimbabwe through another printers’ breeding of hyperinflation under Mugabe is well-known. In the modern period, G+D has expanded operations to include banknote processing, smart cards, identification systems, and e-payments.
