Washington, D.C., 1917, $50, Second Liberty Loan of 1917, 4% Convertible Gold Registered Bond, issued Nov. 15, 1917. A rare registered bond that was issued without coupons. These registered bonds had checks mailed directly to the registered owner, which in your cataloguers opinion makes them rarer than the more readily available bearer bonds as there was little additional evidence of their existence. This is only the second one ever seen in modern times. Black and Brown print on cream paper. Engraved Treasury officers signatures, Jefferson Vignette on obverse. Embossed U.S. Treasury Seal. Complete with an issued Postal Savings envelope possibly belonging to the bonds owner. Pencil graffiti on reverse does not detract from rarity. Second Liberty Loan Converted Gold Coupon Bond of 1927-1942. This was the lowest denomination of Liberty Loan Bonds issued. At $20 per troy ounce of Gold in 1918 this was equal to 2 and 1/2 ounces of Gold. That is over $4,000.00 at today’s prices. The golden color of this particular series makes it one of the most popular Liberty Loans to collect amongst both Bond and Large size type note collectors. It has become quite a challenge to put together a “year set” of the “Short” and “Long” series bonds as the Herbstman Census only list about 20 of these “Short” Bonds known and most are not complete.
