He established the banking house of Trevor and Colgate, afterward known as J. B. Colgate and Company. His loans to the federal government during the financial crisis of 1873 reestablished confidence in the United States and Europe. The company designed and manufactured a submarine boat designed for use in placing torpedoes under the bottoms of war vessels. It is the design of her owners, The Submarine Monitor Company, to construct a larger vessel, to be provided with many additional improvements. Yet the little Peacemaker has obtained such success that, if the new craft does any better, it will be a subject of congratulation for those interested.
