The 25 cent denomination has a small vignette of glass blowers. The Salem Glass Works issued its own scrip in the 1870s. Photograph of Jno. Craven dated Feb.10, 1872. The 5 cent, 25 cent and 50 cent notes all are signed but may be fraudulent signatures. No examples have been offered in Heritage auctions. Culver Barcalow issued Merchant Scrip Notes during the Civil War. Although the Wait book lists these as an unknown issuer, there is evidence they were issued by Culver Barcalow. XF to Uncirculated. VG, stains, missing lower right corner, still very rare. The last example to be offered at auction was in 2012 at Stacks, otherwise an extremely rare and desirable note and possibly an unlisted denomination. Black on green “1” Protectors, The bank was incorporated in 1859 and converted in 1865 into the Ocean County National Bank of Toms River, which closed in 1881.
