Included is a contemporary postcard featuring the Bleriot IV in flight, despite the fact that this iteration of the plane could not fly. Also includes a postcard of Georges Guynemer, who was a top fighter ace for France with 54 victories during World War I, and a French national hero at the time of his death. Other planes, such as the Curtiss Biplane, Goupy No.1, and the Farman Biplane. Includes several postcards featuring photos of the ‘La Ville de Paris,’ ‘République’ and its successor ‘Capitaine-Marchal,’ respectively. Opinions such as those expressed by The New York Times that the “War Dirigibles Must Yield to the Aeroplane” reflected a growing awareness of the dangers surrounding airships. Highlights include photos of Jules Védrines, Henri Farman airplanes in flight and at rest, the experimental aircraft Antoinette VI, as well as a picture of Albert Kimmerling, a pioneer aviator who made the first airplane flight in Africa, taking off at the Nahoon Racetrack at East London, South Africa on 28 December 1909 in a Voisin biplane. Featured pilots include Maurice Colliex, Henri Farman, and Hubert Latham, who was the first person to attempt to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane. Due to engine failure during his first of two attempts to cross the Channel, he became the first person to land an aeroplane on a body of water. Featured aircraft include the Farman MF.11, which was used as a reconnaissance and light bomber during the Great War, as well as the F.60 Goliath which was instrumental in the creation of airlines and commercial routes in Europe following the war. The lot also includes postcards of scenes and figures, such as Captain Ferdinand Ferber, who was a French Army officer who played an important role in the development of aviation.
