Samuel Sartain, Philadelphia (well known as an engraver. Signed by Alfred Mordecai, American soldier; officer in the United States army; born Jan. 3, 1804; died in Philadelphia Oct. 23, 1887. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point June 24, 1819, and was graduated, the first in his class, July 1, 1823. In 1842 he was appointed assistant to the chief ordnance, officer in Washington, D. C. He served as a member of the Board of Ordnance from 1839 to 1860. He was brevetted major on May 30, 1848, for meritorious services during the war with Mexico. He was in charge of some of the largest arsenals in the United States: Washington, D. C., in 1833 and again in 1844-55.
