Archives International Auctions - Auction 115 July 28, 2026
Introduction to the Sale Foreword On behalf of the entire Archives International Auctions team, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 115th auction, pre- sented in two sessions on July 28th, 2026. This 585-lot sale spans U.S. and worldwide banknotes, U.S. and world coins, scripophily, historic and security printing ephemera, checks, drafts and exchanges, and postal history, with a substantial group of Mississippi antebellum banknotes, bills of exchange, and fiscal documents drawn from an old-time collection assembled nearly 40 years ago and largely unseen at auction in decades. As always, a significant number of lots appear at public auction for the first time. The foreign banknote section is anchored by strong depth in China, from Central Bank of China color trial and essay specimens to a Bank of the Northwest 1925 issued note that stands as the only graded example in the PMG census (Lot 45). Other highlights include a Jordan 1949 5 Dinars PMG About Uncirculated 50 (Lot 121, Est. $1,750), Saudi Arabia Haj pilgrim receipts from the early Monetary Agency issues (Lots 155–157), and the Bank of Canada’s 1935 “English Text” specimen trio in Gem to Superb Gem grades (Lots 14–16). A rare and historically loaded piece is the 1856 William Walker military script note from Nicaragua, hand-signed by Walker as self-declared President during his filibuster regime (Lot 144, Est. $8,500). U.S. coins are led by an early Flowing Hair Silver Dollar of 1795 (Lot 194, Est. $5,000) and a 1799 Draped Bust Dollar (Lot 195, Est. $4,500), alongside a key-date 1889-CC Morgan Dollar in NGC AU 50 (Lot 209, Est. $7,000). On the federal fiscal side, a 1912 Postal Savings Coupon Bond specimen carries provenance to the John E. Herzog and Dr. Joseph Vacca collections (Lot 315, Est. $4,000). The checks, drafts and exchanges section is exceptionally deep this sale, with large groupings of Western territorial and frontier banking material from Montana, Colorado, and Nevada, complemented by the aforementioned Mississippi antebellum consignment — proof stock certificates, bank drafts, uncut proof sheets, and fiscal documents from Natchez, Vicksburg, Grenada, and other antebellum institutions, including a rare uncut sheet of four Commercial Bank of Rodney notes (Lot 303, Est. $1,700, first time seen by the cataloger) and an uncut Mississippi Mutual Insurance Co. trio (Lot 304, Est. $800). Scripophily highlights include a strong run of notable-autograph certificates: J.P. Morgan (Lot 514), Milton Hershey (Lot 518), Russell Sage (Lot 516), William K. Vanderbilt (Lot 513), Collis P. Huntington (Lot 515), and Melvil Dewey of Dewey Decimal fame (Lot 517), alongside Civil War figures Benjamin Franklin Butler (Lot 512) and Confederate general William Mahone (Lot 519). Continuing a theme from recent sales, six more Poyaisian Land Grants signed by Sir Gregor MacGregor appear in this offering (Lots 361–366), and the Mexican “Bono de Caja” specimen bonds return as well, led by a pair of Banco Español Refaccionario specimens (Lots 138–139, Est. $900 and $1,100). Our next auction is currently in planning and will feature additional offerings of banknotes, scripophily, coins, ephemera, and historic bonds and fiscal documents. We are actively accepting consignments for our upcoming sales. We sincerely thank you for your continued interest and support. We hope this sale brings both enjoyment and meaningful additions to your collection. Best of luck, Bob Schwartz
