The receipts are significant slave-related documents, with printed tax forms explicitly enumerating slaves among taxable property categories, and one receipt containing a manuscript entry recording 2 Slaves as taxable property. Additional taxable categories include pianos, pleasure carriages, Bowie knives, dueling pistols, stallions, watches, and other personal property, providing an excellent record of antebellum Mississippi taxation.
