Franklinite is a black, iron-magnesium-zinc oxide mineral (a member of the spinel group) found almost exclusively at the famous zinc deposits of Franklin and Sterling Hill in New Jersey, after which it’s named. Its formula is roughly (Zn,Mn,Fe)(Fe,Mn)₂O₄. It’s notable as a major zinc ore from those localities, often occurring alongside zincite and willemite in a calcite matrix. It’s weakly magnetic and typically appears as black, metallic-to-submetallic grains or octahedral crystals. (2).
