Lynchburg, VA, November 4, 1861, $100 deposit certificate issued by the Citizens Savings Bank at Lynchburg, black engraved print on cream paper, ornate multi-vignette design including allegorical figure of Virginia at left, central tobacco hogshead scene, and portrait vignette at right. The certificate promises payment with interest upon surrender, noting rates of five percent per annum for ninety days and four percent for shorter periods. Serial number 7865, issued to C.C. Tuckett (or similar), signed by bank officers as Treasurer and President, with imprint of American Bank Note Company, New York. Issued shortly after Virginia’s secession, this represents a private Southern banking instrument circulating under Confederate authority during the early Civil War period, while still utilizing pre-war engraved plates. A scarce and historically significant Confederate-era Virginia banking document bridging antebellum finance and wartime economy.
