John Adams Dix (1798 to 1879) was a prominent American statesman, Union general, and influential railroad executive whose career spanned both public service and private industry during the nation’s expansion. He served as U.S. Senator and later as Secretary of the Treasury under James Buchanan, and gained national recognition at the outbreak of the American Civil War for his firm pro-Union stance.
