Lot of 35 Issued bank checks, drafts, certificates of deposit, and one mining stock certificate representing frontier financial activity in Arizona, Dakota Territory, Oregon, Utah, and Idaho. Includes examples from First National Bank; Pima County Bank, Tucson; Cochise County Bank, Tombstone; Bank of Bismarck; Bank of Walla Walla; First National Bank of Portland; Whitewood Banking Co.; Bank of Idaho; and Niagara Mining & Smelting Co., Salt Lake City, among others. Designs feature allegorical figures, mining and frontier vignettes, territorial bank imprints, revenue stamps, and ornate engraved typography. A diverse Western expansion era group spanning mining camps, stage lines, and territorial banking operations. Condition ranges from Good to Very Fine overall, with folds, edge wear, punch cancellations, staining, and typical banking markings. (35). Lot includes of over 100, I/C Checks and Drafts, all are from Merchants National Bank, located in Burlington, Vermont. A majority are intaglio printed drafts by the American Bank Note Company that have black text with a large spread winged eagle depicted at top center, the balance of the checks have black text with green background. VF to AU condition, most dating from 1918. Over 100 checks. Merchants Bank was organized in 1849 and took a national charter in 1865 becoming The Merchants National Bank of Burlington, Vermont.
