Lot of 2 Unissued Bank Checks, Black print with horse drawn carriage at right and pioneers at left, S/Ns 31 & 32, Checks are in VF to AU condition. (2). Founded by entrepreneur Ben Holladay, this company operated one of the most extensive stage and mail systems in the American West during the 1860s. Holladay purchased the assets of the defunct Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Co.—the parent of the famed Pony Express—making his line its direct successor. The company carried passengers, mail, and express freight across the Overland Trail between the Missouri River and the Pacific, serving key routes through Utah, Colorado, and the Montana Territory until its sale to Wells Fargo & Co. in 1866. ��������������������������������������������� Est. $120-240 Montana Territory & Statehood 423 423 Montana Territory & Statehood Banking & Territorial Document Collection, 1870s to 1900s Montana Territory & Statehood, 1870-1900s. Hershfield & Co., Donnell, Clark & Larabie, State Savings Bank (Butte), Treasurer of Jefferson County, Montana Territory Treasurer’s Office, and related Helena, Butte and territorial-era institutions. Several pieces bear revenue stamps, territorial imprints, cancellation handstamps, manuscript endorsements and period banking notations. Designs feature engraved vignettes including allegorical figures, mining scenes, livestock and classic National Bank layouts. Conditions range from Good to Very Fine overall, with expected folds, edge wear, punch cancellations and period handling. (45). Includes examples from First National Bank of Helena; Merchants National Bank; Second National Bank; The Helena National Bank; North Butte Mining Co.; L.H. Hershfield & Bro., Bankers; Donnell, Clark & Larabie; H.A. Bruns & Co., Bankers; and other regional financial houses. A substantial stacked group of First National Bank of Helena waterfall vignette checks is included. Designs feature mining imagery, engraved allegorical figures, frontier scenes, ornate typography, and multiple imprinted orange revenue stamps. Condition ranges from Good to Very Fine overall, with folds, punch cancellations, edge wear, staining, and typical banking markings. (38). Lot of 23 I/C and I/U early financial documents, including multiple issued checks and drafts from First National Bank of Helena, printed in black on yellow paper with striking vignette of “Old Faithful” geyser on left; Two large-format Territory of Montana warrants, printed in blue and black with allegorical Liberty vignette and bold red “ORIGINAL” overprint, one issued for “BOUNTY FOR KILLING 95 Squirrels”. A significant and visually impressive group illustrating early banking and territorial finance in the heart of Montana’s mining era. All range from VF to XF condition. (23).
