Lot of financial ephemera including 6 issued stock certificates of The Rhode Island Public Service Co. representing denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 shares, printed with ornate colored borders and detailed corporate text; a Wireless Telegraph Co. of Canada, Ltd. issued stock certificate dated July 25, 1923; an engraved portrait proof print likely related to security printing production; and a group of obsolete U.S. banknotes, checks, and related paper currency items, including examples from The Bank of the U.S., Presidents Bank, Bridgeport National Bank, and other 19th century financial institutions, along with a Series 1928 $5 Federal Reserve Note. Items show varying degrees of wear, folds, and aging consistent with circulated financial documents and early security printing material. Conditions range from Fair to Very Fine overall, with some faults typical for documents of this age. (17). Lot of 4 cigar advertising items, Includes: 3 Illustrated Cigar Advertisements (approximately 8.5 × 5.5 inches) issued by Hillier & Thomas, successors to R. J. Hillier. Advertisements promote El Finesto, Lady Sinclair, and The Great “Hillier” cigars, each illustrated with detailed cigar renderings and period pricing and branding text emphasizing Havana-made production. Also included is an embossed cigar box label (approximately 6.5 × 2.5 inches) for Club House cigars, featuring bold color, gold embossing, and a central cigar vignette. Printed on period paper stock with strong visual appeal throughout. Conditions are VF overall, with light toning and minor handling typical of commercial ephemera. California State Telegraph Co., 1867 Telegram Message Discussing Sending 10 “Chinamen” To Help Open the Road. Strawberry, California, 1867. Telegrammessage from “Arnold?” to Geo(rge) W. Swan, on California State Telegraph Company header, Discusses the sending of 10 “Chinamen” in order to “open the road to the Summit in 10 days.” “If you will furnish that number, I will furnish the same number at the Company’s expense, Send twenty (20) and the Company will pay half the expense, Answer at once”. Red text with black handwriting. Fine-VF condition with toning. Chinese workers were extremely important for the building of railroads, roads and construction in the west. Chinese miners tended to live in groups and work claims the Americans had abandoned. Initially, Americans found the newcomers peculiar and would visit Chinese camps for amusement. Then, in 1852, a year of serious crop failure in southern China, more then 20,000 Chinese flooded the San Francisco customs house. The previous year only 2,716 had arrived. By the end of the 1850s, Chinese immigrants made up one-fifth of the population of the four counties that constituted the Southern Mines.
